A distinguished scholar on the Harlem Renaissance, UW Library Science Professor Ethelene Whitmire’s latest research concerns the African American diaspora in Denmark during the Jazz Age.  This new work was triggered by a surprising discovery made while walking through a cemetery in Copenhagen in 2013, when she noticed a name that seemed out of place.  In this talk, Professor Whitmire will address the factors that led African Americans – including American jazz musicians – to re-settle in Denmark and will discuss their experiences and achievements abroad.  Professor Whitmire was one of the featured presenters during the Jazz Consortium’s “Jazz in the Library” series in Spring 2015 and, though not a jazz program per se, her talk should be of interest to jazz fans.

5:00 PM, Madison Public Library Central Branch.  Free admission.
