The Paul Dietrich Jazz Ensemble has been active in the Madison, Wisconsin area since fall of 2016. A professional level ensemble dedicated to showcasing modern big band jazz, the band plays a variety of music, some written by its leader, some by up and coming regional composers, and some by nationally and internationally acclaimed composers such as Maria Schneider, Darcy James Argue and Christine Jensen. The band features many of the Madison area’s best jazz musicians, including Tony Barba, Allen Cordingley, David Cooper, Darren Sterud, Jamie Kember and John Christensen.
Paul, who is also a trumpet player, has been leading the Chicago-based Paul Dietrich Quintet since 2012, and has released two acclaimed albums with that group, most recently “Focus” on ears&eyes Records in 2017. He has been writing for big band since 2010, and in that time he has written over a dozen commissioned works and his music has been performed throughout the US.
