Cliff Frederiksen is a nationally known guitarist and singer, with great versatility and talent.
Tonight he’s paired up with special guest Darcie Johnston. Vocalist/songwriter Darcie Johnston began performing in the Washington DC area in 1985. Within a year, she was featured on the syndicated radio program “Music Americana” and the giant country station WMZQ with her original folk compositions, and was selected for an ASCAP young composers workshop led by Hal David. From her roots music beginnings, she soon migrated to her life-long loves: swing, Brazilian rhythms, and jazz interpretations of the songbooks of the American popular composers.
Until she moved to Madison in 2006, Darcie performed regularly throughout the Washington-Baltimore area at restaurants and jazz clubs such as the historic One Step Down, festivals, and private engagements with world-class musicians, including guitarists Paul Wingo, Paul Pieper, Geoff Reecer, Justin Lees, and John Albertson; pianist Robert Redd; drummers Brooks Tegler and Bertel Knox, bassists David Marsh and Sal DeRafelle, and vibes-master Chuck Redd. From 2000 to 2005, her quartet was the only regularly monthly booking at Bangkok Blues in Falls Church, Virginia, billed by the Washington Post as “the mecca for local jazz and blues musicians.”
Darcie has a fine sense of rhythm and musicality. Her signature strength, though, is her ability to interpret a song, blending thoughtful phrasing with emotional truth. Her theme-based shows have included tributes, a “Coals in Her Stocking” holiday concert, “A Night at the Oscars” featuring tunes from Oscar-winning movies, and “A Crash Course in Love.” She is known for innovative arrangements of old favorites as well as finding forgotten gems.
